Our first canned coffee is High Brew’s nitro cold brew with sweet cream. I purchased this coffee at Wegmans, a New York based grocery store chain with a few locations in the central North Carolina area. Wegmans is interesting because it’s part grocery store and part restaurant, going beyond your typical hot bar and subs with pizza, sushi, wings, and burgers made fresh in store with seating areas. I hadn’t seen High Wire at any other store I went to, im not sure if it’s a regional company or what, but I wish I saw it more often now that I’ve tasted it.
This is our first ‘Nitro’ drink, meaning the coffee is carbonated with nitrous oxide, which comes from a widget in the bottom of the can. Compared to carbonation with carbon dioxide, nitro is far smoother and creates a cascading effect on the edges of a glass. Guinness beer is also nitrous carbonated, as are a few in store drinks and canned products with Starbucks. Local coffee houses may also have nitro options, but they require installing taps and a carbonation system so it’s a high bar to pass cost wise.
Nitrous widgets in cans is a genius invention, really, but flavor matters more than novelty. Despite being cold brew this coffee was sweet, the bitterness coming across more like dark chocolate than coffee. The can is 200mg of caffeine though, so I feel pretty wired. I’d prefer if it was less caffeine, and if it was less money for that matter, but as it stands I’d get this again. Value wise it gets a pass for being nitro and high caffeine, but it's still much more expensive than something of quality thats freshly brewed. Drink it out of the can or pour it into a pint glass, either way you’ll enjoy this coffee.
